Multiple intelligence workshops
Good old intelligence
Intelligence is the acquired ability to grasp concepts, retain them, and utilize them for solving complex life problems in the future. Contrary to popular belief, intelligence is only marginally related to academic grades and performance, although these grades are the brightest reflection of one’s theoretical abilities, which usually also reflect in practice. Good grades nonetheless offer healthier educational opportunities, which again better the individual’s future. It is a constant endeavor of all parents and teachers that their children should become ‘very intelligent’ do well in academics to thus reach the zenith of success in life. However the nomenclature ad classification of intelligence in reality is a more profound and a deeper concept than mere studies.
According to Harvard University Professor Dr. Howard Gardner, intelligence is not a singular construct; it has many primary sensory dimensions. Each of these dimensions is equally important for the attainment of goals and realizing one’s optimum potential. The traditional intelligence measures cannot explain the success and failure of all those who try their luck. This multiple dimensional outlook to intelligence truly helps to tap every individuals’ hidden potential, explaining how even though one may lack certain skills, the same person may be exceptionally proficient in others. That is the reason why successful people; obviously, intelligent people, may not have all excelled academically; but have still managed to reach the peak of triumph in their lives.
9 dimensions of intelligence
Some people have a knack with sound, can play musical instruments and make music; they learn best by listening. Others visualize things with their mind’s eye and have more spatial intelligence. Several have a flair for linguistic and language based tasks while others like calculative, logical and mathematical missions. Athletes, dancers and musicians have bodily intelligence as they are in great control of bodily movements. People with enhanced sensitivity to other’s moods have interpersonal intelligence and make good counselors or leaders. Those with intrapersonal abilities are usually composed and calm people. Nature focused and environmentally intelligent people have high naturalistic intelligence while existential intelligence adds the spiritual and religious awareness to the picture.
Building these in children
Some children innately are stronger in one dimension that the other. When children as well as parents and teachers are made aware of this prowess, it can be exploited to enhance learning and development in the child. The workshops involve fun filled activities in different intelligence dimensions and these tap the child’s curiosity in each. Once these are identified, parents are tangled into the subsequent workshop sessions in order to build an enhanced understanding of their own children while tips and techniques are suggested to strengthen their positives and overcome their negatives. The learning process thus becomes complete.
Intelligence: Beyond what we think
While logic and reasoning gets everyone ahead in life, it cannot explain why some people are more ‘cut out’ for being around people and are great with interpersonal interaction while others are designed for creativity or research which allows them to spend greater time with themselves and yet; both kinds successfully accomplish their life goals. Many identify these intelligences as ‘aptitudes’. The concept of intelligence has always been subjective, but objective application of these principles enables us to identify the areas in which our children are excelling or lagging behind; and appropriate steps can be taken to tap the resilient modality and improve on the weak one.
MINDFRAMES: Reframing intelligence
It is imperative that we look beyond academic grades and build on the varied aspects of intelligence in our children so that we are able to exploit their strengths and overcome their weaknesses if any. Our workshops on multiple intelligence building help tap the 9 diverse intelligences in the child enabling the personality to develop. Intelligence is about thinking independently; we help to establish such thinking in children through games, puzzles and participation and their parents’ cooperation in assisting their development.
